11:00am – 1:00pm
All About New Recycling Basics
As of January 1st, 2019 the South Hills Area Council of Governments (COG) changed the recycling rules. Just to review, here is the list of what is or is not acceptable.
YES: clean and dry cans of aluminum or tin, #1 and #2 plastic, newspaper, mixed paper and corrugated cardboard, the following items are NOT recyclable:
NO: plastic wrap, plastics #3 through #7, food trays of any type, plastic items such as, but not limited to flower pots, vinyl siding, records or VCR tapes, metal, foil or non-can items such as lawnmower blades, dog chains, car motors and brake pads, styrofoam, rubber products such as hoses, tires and balls, and GLASS OF ANY TYPE.
Since glass remains a substance of value, the PA Resource Council (PRC) has been assisting communities to sponsor glass recycling “Pop-Up” programs. Scott Township has scheduled its Glass “Pop-Up” to be held Saturday, October 19 from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M at at Scott Park. ALL South Hills communities are encouraged to bring their empty clean, dry glass jars and bottles to this event.
In addition to its October 19th “Pop-Up” Glass Recycling event, Scott Township is excited to offer a free educational program for SCOTT TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS ONLY on Saturday, October 12, one week prior to the Glass “Pop-UP” at the Scott Township Municipal building (301 Lindsay Road, Carnegie, PA) from 10:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.
Participants will have an opportunity to learn from two experts. Our first speaker, Nancy Martin, is an Environmental Educator for the PRC and coordinator of PRC West’s Watershed Education Program. She will present a program on Recycling Awareness and answer these common questions: Lids on? Lids off? Labels on? Labels off. Rinse or Wash? Which plastics are acceptable? What about plastic bags?
Our second speaker is Dianne Peterson, owner of Our Children, Our Earth. She will share solutions to the many recycling challenges we now face. Not only will Dianne demonstrate the new “3Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Replace” but she will add a fourth, “Refuse”! Best of all Dianne will bring the most popular items from her shop for your perusal and/or purchase.
Dylan Weiss, author of “Skunk Tales Trilogy,” and environmental advocate will serve as moderator.
